Request for Updated Node.js 24 or 22 Version in Azure Linux MCR Image

The latest Node.js version currently available in the Azure Linux MCR image is v20.14, which is approaching end of support:

This version is outdated and requires urgent attention to support newer Node.js and npm releases. At present, we are unable to upgrade to npm v11 or higher due to compatibility constraints with Node.js 20.14, which remains the latest version available in the MCR registry.

Additionally, the existing npm dependency chain includes a high-severity vulnerability (e.g., glob vulnerability – GHSA-5j98-mcp5-4vw2
), which makes upgrading critical from a security standpoint.

A similar request was previously raised in this ticket:

However, it was closed without an ETA being shared. It has now been over two weeks, and the updated image is still not visible in the MCR repository.

Could you please provide an ETA for the updated Node.js image? Also, kindly consider closing the ticket only once the image is available in MCR and share the corresponding link. Marking the feature as completed before it is accessible to users in MCR creates confusion.

It's unclear to me how commited is Microsoft to solve this.
I would be interested to get a clear statement about this work and its delivery.

Not sure why I got tagged, but the packages are available. This is how we do the update.

tdnf remove -y nodejs nodejs-npm;
tdnf install -y nodejs24 nodejs24-full-i18n nodejs24-npm;

i believe we are looking for the udpated distroless image, not the packages themselves.

I'm just a user too, but here is what I would do. I would create a mutistage docker build with:

• mcr.microsoft.com/azurelinux/distroless/debug for the build stage
• mcr.microsoft.com/azurelinux/distroless/base for the final stage
• runs tdnf install -y nodejs24 nodejs24-full-i18n nodejs24-npm; in the build stage
• in the final stage, copy the nodejs24 files, and your app

you would need to use the base image to run tdnf, and you would be responsible to create and store the image in your acr.
the desire here is to rely on already built and maintained image, made available on a powerful public acr.
